Looking Ahead: Living in Light of Christ's Return
Looking Ahead: Living in Light of Christ's Return
Scripture
"For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes." (1 Corinthians 11:26, LSB)
More Than a Memorial
The Lord's Supper not only points backward—it points forward.
Every Communion service contains an element of anticipation. The table reminds us that the crucified Christ is also the risen Christ, and the risen Christ is the returning King.
Paul says we proclaim His death "until He comes."
The Lord's Table is therefore a rehearsal dinner for the marriage supper of the Lamb.
The Blessed Hope
The Christian faith is not anchored merely in what Christ has done but also in what Christ has promised to do.
"Looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus." (Titus 2:13, LSB)
Because Christ is coming again:
A Puritan Reflection
Richard Baxter wrote: "Live as men that are going to another world."
Communion helps us do exactly that.
Practical Application
Prayer Guide:
Praise: Worship Christ as King.
Hope: Thank Him for His promises.
Surrender: Yield future plans to His will.
Readiness: Ask God to keep your heart watchful.
Prayer
"Lord Jesus, thank You that You are coming again. Help me live with eternity in view. May my priorities reflect the certainty of Your return and my heart remain ready to meet You. Amen."

Because Christ is coming again:
- Suffering is temporary.
- Injustice will be corrected.
- Death will be defeated.
- Every promise of God will be fulfilled.
A Puritan Reflection
Richard Baxter wrote: "Live as men that are going to another world."
Communion helps us do exactly that.
Practical Application
- Begin each day reminding yourself that Christ could return today.
- Hold earthly possessions loosely.
- Invest in eternal priorities.
- Encourage fellow believers with the hope of Christ's return.
