The Expulsive Power of a Greater Affection

The Expulsive Power of a Greater Affection

Read: Matthew 12:43-45; Colossians 3:1-2

Simply removing a sinful habit is never enough. Jesus warned that an empty, swept house becomes a dwelling place for even greater darkness. Thomas Chalmers understood this well -- the only way to drive out a lesser love is to fill its place with a greater one. We do not overcome sin merely by willpower or by saying no. We overcome it by saying yes to something infinitely better. When Christ becomes our greatest affection, lesser affections lose their grip. The Word of God, taken in consistently, builds that greater love day by day until it crowds out what once controlled us.

Reflection Question: What lesser affection is competing with your love for Christ right now, and what would it look like to pursue Christ more intentionally in that same space?

Practical Application: Replace one specific habit this week with a time of Scripture reading or prayer. Do not simply remove the habit -- actively fill that time with something that draws you closer to God.
