Does Romans 8 Teach Speaking in Tongues?
Understanding the Comfort of Romans 8:26–27

Romans 8:26–27 is one of the most comforting passages in all of Scripture. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most misunderstood. Some readers assume that Paul's reference to the Spirit's "groanings too deep for words" describes speaking in tongues, but a careful reading of the passage points us in another direction. Notice what Paul actually says.
"The Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words." (Romans 8:26)

The subject of the sentence is not the believer. The subject is the Holy Spirit.

Throughout Romans 8 Paul describes three different groanings:
* Creation groans (vv. 22)
* Believers groan (v. 23)
* The Holy Spirit groans (v. 26)
Each has a different subject and purpose.

The Spirit's groanings are described as "too deep for words." Rather than referring to spoken language, Paul emphasizes the Spirit's perfect intercession before the Father on behalf of believers who do not know how to pray as they ought.

The comfort of this passage is not that Christians discover a new prayer technique. The comfort is that God Himself supplies what we lack. Even when our prayers are weak, incomplete, or confused, the Holy Spirit faithfully intercedes according to the perfect will of God (Romans 8:27). That means every believer—not just some believers—can rest confidently in the Spirit's ongoing ministry.

Practical Application
If you've ever felt discouraged because you didn't know how to pray, Romans 8 is for you.
Don't wait until you have the perfect words.
Come to the Father honestly.
Trust the Holy Spirit to intercede faithfully.
And rest in this wonderful truth:

Your confidence in prayer is not found in the eloquence of your words, but in the faithfulness of the Spirit who prays for you.
