When You Don't Know How to Pray
When You Don't Know How to Pray
Romans 8:26–27
Have you ever come before God with a burden so heavy that you simply didn't know what to say? Perhaps it was after hearing a difficult diagnosis, standing beside a hospital bed, grieving the loss of someone you love, or watching a child make painful choices. In those moments, words seem inadequate.
The encouraging truth of Romans 8:26 is that God never expected His children to pray perfectly.
Paul writes: "And in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should..."(Romans 8:26, LSB)
Notice that Paul includes himself. Even an apostle admitted that there were times he did not know exactly what to pray. The issue isn't a lack of faith—it is our human limitation. We cannot always see what God is accomplishing, so we cannot always know what to ask.
Thankfully, our hope is not found in the perfection of our prayers but in the perfection of God's Spirit.
The Holy Spirit comes alongside believers and faithfully intercedes for us. Even when our prayers consist of tears, sighs, or simple cries for mercy, the Spirit presents our deepest needs before the Father according to God's perfect will.
Practical Application
The next time you feel overwhelmed in prayer:
* Don't stop praying because you lack the right words.
* Be honest with God about your weakness.
* Rest in the confidence that the Holy Spirit is praying perfectly on your behalf.
God never rejects a humble heart that comes to Him in dependence.
