Dropping the Spectator Mentality: Why Church is Not a Stadium

We live in a culture designed for spectators.
We buy tickets to watch athletes run, stream shows to watch actors perform, and scroll through feeds to watch other people live their lives. If we are not careful, this passive mindset easily creeps right into the doors of Grace Point on Sunday mornings. We can start viewing the sanctuary as a stadium, the sermon as entertainment, and our attendance as our weekly contribution to God. But when Jesus stood before His followers in Matthew 28:18–20, He didn't invite them to a weekly show. He gave them a mandate.

The big idea of our current study is simple yet profound: 
The church does not invent its mission; it receives its mission from the risen Christ. When Jesus says, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me," He completely removes the option of passive church attendance. If He is the cosmic Sovereign, we do not get to treat His commands like optional elective courses.

To break free from an attendance-centered view of church, we have to start seeing ourselves as deployed workers rather than paying consumers.

Church attendance is the fuel stop; disciple-making is the drive.
