We Do Not Lose Heart

“Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we received mercy, we do not lose heart, but we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness or adulterating the word of God, but by the manifestation of truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.” (2 Corinthians 4:1–2, LSB)

Paul declares that because he has received mercy in his ministry, he refuses to grow weary or resort to deception, but instead commends himself to every conscience by openly setting forth the truth.

Ministry -- whether from a pulpit or a workplace break room -- is sustained not by human strength but by received mercy. Paul had every reason to quit. He was rejected, misunderstood, and physically worn. Yet mercy was his anchor. The same mercy that saved you is the same mercy that fuels your calling to speak truth. Notice that Paul does not say he never felt the weight of the work. He simply refused to surrender to it. The gospel was too important and the mercy too great. When the temptation comes to soften the message, manipulate the moment, or simply go quiet, return to the mercy that first opened your own eyes. That mercy is renewable. That mercy does not run out. Ask God today to renew your sense of gospel urgency by reminding you of what He rescued you from.
